Avoid these 5 Bad Dental Habits for a Healthier Smile

Even if you are taking great care of your teeth with daily flossing, brushing, and limiting your sugar intake, you may still unknowingly jeopardize your oral health with other bad habits. Understanding what negatively affects your tooth enamel will help you boost your hygiene habits to minimize cavities and plaque growth. 

What Not to Do

The following are practices that can negatively impact your smile if you do not care for your teeth after each one:

  1. Eating just before bed – If you snack after you’ve brushed your teeth, oral bacteria will have several hours of uninterrupted opportunity to spread, creating a feeding frenzy for plaque and tartar.

  2. Drinking citrus drinks or soda – The acid found in these drinks will eat away at your tooth enamel. It is important to thoroughly rinse your mouth with water when finished to help remove any remaining acid. 

  3. Snacking –  Sticky snacks and those that are high in simple carbohydrates like pretzels and chips are harmful to your teeth and gums. If you do not have the opportunity to brush after snacking, it is important to rinse your mouth with water to help remove the sugars and particles left along the gumline.

  4. Rushing through your oral hygiene routine – When you don’t brush for a full two minutes, you increase the probability for plaque to harden into tartar. Set a timer or use an electric toothbrush to help you stay diligent. 

  5. Skipping a Dental Visit – You may think that because you take good care of your teeth, it wouldn’t hurt to miss an appointment with your dentist. Even with a vigilant oral hygiene regime, you are vulnerable to tooth decay and early gum disease. You need regular exams and cleanings to remove stubborn plaque and tartar.
